AFL Finals Week 3 Preview

September 15th, 2010

There’s only one more week of play before the top two AFL teams are named, and fans across the world can start preparing for the AFL Grand Finals.  Friday night, September 17, will kick off the AFL Finals week 3 with a much-anticipated match between the Geelong Cats and the Collingwood Magpies.

These two teams are both heavy favourites to win the flag this year, and this match will see one of them eliminated from Grand Final contention. While Geelong is going into this one as defending champions, they are the 2.00 underdogs. They’ve been put through the wringer in these Finals, which leaves plenty of fans and experts wondering if they have enough left to get a win over a very strong Collingwood team. In addition, there are still plenty of questions about the named team for this week’s match and how key player Andrew Mackie fits in.

On the other side of the field, the Collingwood Magpies are coming in off a full week’s rest and preparation. The week off has led to some questions about whether or not the team has cooled down, but it has also given the team plenty of time to get healthy. This week is likely to see the return of Simon Prestigiacomo and Sharrod Wellingham, which will make the ‘Pies an even tougher test.

The St Kilda Saints and Western Bulldogs will cap off this preliminary final week with their battle on Saturday, September 18. The Saints are heading into this match as heavy 1.21 favourites to win. It’s no wonder when you consider their successes over the season. The fact that the Bulldogs are fully battle worn at this point in the AFL Finals also bodes well for the Stains. The Western team has had two very tough rounds so far in these 2010 AFL Finals. They just managed to squeak past the Swans last week with a 77-72 win. As they’re looking increasingly tired, it’s hard to see them overtaking a healthy and rested St Kilda squad.
